I was listening to Dan Harris’s 10% Happier podcast with Norman Fischer, a new name to me, and it resonated on many levels. I highly recommend it to you! Dan Harris gave it the title “The World’s A Mess, But Don’t Freak Out.” So much of what we read and hear these days sounds like doomsday is arriving next week, and it’s easy to feel discouraged and give up entirely, not even do small actions (maybe, like get out of bed??). This podcast recommends that we don’t do that giving-up thing because the problem seems too big. The message in this podcast is one of hope.
Two points from the interview I want to mention here.
- Norman Fischer says when you don’t know what to do, “do what’s good.” As he points out, we actually know what’s good to do. Dan Harris mentions Jonathan Franzen who recommends (to paraphrase) getting involved in your community and being useful because that’s what will be needed in the new world order.
- With regard to hope, Norman Fischer states that life is “so amazing”. He says that hope exists as long as you’re alive, hope exists until the moment of death. Until then, there is a future, which is unknown.
I encourage everyone to listen to this podcast – all you have to do is give up a little bit of your despair.
